reseting access to mysql database

How do I reset the privileges if I have lost my password and all I get is @localhost not even a root@localhost. When I use my IP # it says access to the mySQL server is denied, serevr is on workstation.
I have tried everything I can find and nothing worked. There must be a way to completely uninstall the password that is set now and start fresh. Any help is appreciated…
