Web / Digital Developments Manager

Responsible for the output of the in-house Web / Digital Developments Team including micro-sites advertising exhibitions, online versions of galleries and an Intranet. These tasks were achieved by contributing my PHP/MySQL, web design (XHTML and CSS) and system administration skills to the team efforts. The role also involved a large degree of strategic thinking, involvement in various working groups, the selection of external suppliers and evaluation of software products.

Database Systems Manager
MRC Human Genetics Unit. August ‘03 – August ‘05
Responsible for developing and maintaining database systems used for both scientific and administration purposes. Projects included the development of a patient tracking database, a personnel administration system and an automated holiday booking system. I also participated in general end-user support of LINUX/UNIX systems, PCs, MACs and Networking Issues.

My responsibilities are to develop and deliver modules to students at undergraduate and masters level in the areas of systems analysis, database design, web design, web programming and general IT skills. To achieve this I have helped install and maintain a GNU/Linux web server environment that has enabled the delivery of new SQL/PHP skills based modules as well as enhancing the potential for student development work in existing modules. I have also continued with development work aimed at enhancing staff/ student communication and research, for example a weblog (Apache / MySQL / Mod Perl / Slashcode).

Main responsibilities were to develop and maintain web-based teaching and learning materials and to conduct research into the uses of these materials and provided collaborative environments by students. This involved providing the server environment as well as developing solutions for student progress tracking, authentication and other enhancements. In support of our research is was responsible for teaching students how to use collaborative working tools (NetMeeting), which included producing printed materials as well as video and multimedia teaching aids

Working in a printing environment I prepared print ready postscript files using a variety of Desktop Publishing packages including Quark Xpress, Adobe Photoshop, PageMaker, Illustrator and Acrobat. I also developed automation solutions (coding MS Office macros in VBA and WordBasic) to work more efficiently.
